Draft night is the best event in card gaming and the hardest to host well. Eight players, three packs each, a pick timer, then a tournament - it is a small convention in your house.

Start with the table math. Drafting itself wants everyone around one surface, passing packs - eight seats means at least 96 inches of table length, or the pods fragment and passing becomes a relay race. This is the Mojave Arena's whole reason to exist: eight seats, one surface, everyone passing left.

Then the format shifts: after the draft, players pair off into 1v1 matches. Two matches fit comfortably on a 96 inch table (one per end); if you have a Duel or a dining table for the other pairings, spread out. Keep the Arena as the hub - it is where the pairings board, the prize packs, and the snacks live.

Timing makes or breaks the night. Budget 50 minutes for the draft itself with a relaxed timer, three 50-minute rounds, and transition time - call it four hours. Publish the schedule; drafts that start "whenever everyone gets here" end at 2am.

Supplies that hosts forget: basic lands (a full box - guests never bring enough), extra sleeves, dice for everyone, a printed pairing sheet or an app on the streaming mount screen, and water within reach of every seat that is not sharing a surface with cards. Rail cup holders at all eight positions solve the drink problem structurally - the field stays dry no matter what the crowd does.

Final tip: draft at the start of the night, not the end. Sealed pools can be built tired. Draft picks cannot.
