Ask how much space Magic needs and the honest answer is: which Magic?

A 1v1 Standard or Modern match is compact. Two playmats at 24 by 14 inches, face to face, with deck and graveyard beside each - a 48 by 30 inch surface covers it with room for dice and a judge-legal gap in the middle. This is the geometry the Mojave Duel is built around.

Commander is a different animal. Multiply the battlefield by four, deepen it (Commander board states sprawl - treasure tokens alone can claim a placemat's worth of space), and add the command zone each player needs. Four players want roughly 60 by 60 inches; see our full Commander sizing guide for the details.

Draft night is the sneaky one. Eight players around pods of cards, then breaking into 1v1 matches - you either need one very large table (the 96 inch Arena seats a full draft pod) or several small ones.

Whatever the format, two things stay constant. First: card value. A modern Magic collection routinely carries hundreds or thousands of dollars on the battlefield, and open drinks on the same flat surface is how stories start. A recessed play field with drinks isolated on a rail solves this structurally, not with discipline. Second: sleeves slide. A dedicated playing surface - cloth or a fitted inlay rather than bare wood - keeps stacked cards where you put them.

Our recommendation by format: Duel for the 1v1 grinder, Pod for the Commander pod (it is named that for a reason), Arena for draft night.
